WUSHU CHAMPION SUFFERS SERIOUS NECK INJURY

By Martial News Reporter
A WUSHU champion has had to be flown back to the UK after suffering a neck injury.

Richard Devine, 23, of Carlisle, Cumbria suffered the injury while on a training trip to Moscow, Russia.

However, according to the News and Star newspaper, the Wushu champion suffered the injury while on a trampoline.

He was training with the Wushu Russian team after being shortlisted for the British team for the 2020 Olympics. He has regularly travelled to Russia for extra training.

Following the accident he under-went surgery in Russia and has since been flown back to the UK. His condition is said to be serious.

A double-European champion, Richard specialises in Wushu forms, in which points are awarded for technical ability, precision of technical and overall ability.

Its not clear if the trampoling class was part of the training regime or Richard was doing it for recreational reasons.

Wushu forms are gymnastic in nature and injuries for practitioners are not uncommon. However, the vast majority of these injuries are not serious and the sport has a good overall safety record with strong measures in place at contests to minimise injury.

Richard's injury is serious and he has been flown back to the UK to receive urgent medical attention. He has already undergone surgery in Russia.

Richard finished fifth against the best in the world as part of a British squad at the Beijing Olympics when the sport was included as a demonstration sport.

He has said in the past that Jackie Chan films inspired him to take up martial arts and Wushu in particular.

He trains at the Sands Centre, Carlisle.
